For those of you familiar with the idea of search protection, you’re aware that electrical spikes in your home are very common and if you run any sort of plasma television you will better understand the need for a plasma surge protector. Domestic power supplies are in a constant state of flux, meaning the flow of power is never consistent; it rises and falls out of its normal boundaries all day long. When the power swells, it can create a surge, which can slowly and negatively affect electronic appliances’ internal wiring. Given the sensitive components within a plasma television search protection is ever more important.
The inconsistency in power flow is often referred to as “dirty power”. Dirty power is caused by surges from high-powered appliances turning on and off. With something like a lightning blast that strikes your domestic power lines there is little surge protection can do for you. Your best bet in that event is to unplug your plasma and wait the storm out. Otherwise, you risk your plasma television being destroyed by the intensity of the surge created by the lightning strike.
In normal circumstances power surges that affect your home on a daily basis can be thwarted with a standard surge protector. Protecting your plasma television is the same thing. Installing a surge protector for plasma units will protect your equipment from these constant surges. Any excess energy that seeps into the line will be absorbed and dispersed harmlessly.
When choosing the best surge protector for plasma, you want something with at least a 1500 Joules rating. Also you are look at the connected equipment warranty. It should cover the cost of all of your home theater equipment and the lines coming into your plasma. This includes AV cables, phone lines, power adapter outlets and even speaker wires. The connected equipment warranty comes free as part of the purchase with your surge protector so there won’t be any hidden costs to worry about. This kind of warranty is essential if your home insurance policy does not cover lightning strikes. Without it you risk losing your plasma television to unwanted surges in power at the cost of replacing an entire system.
With plasma surge protectors it is a really necessary to have three-mode protection. Three mode protection is L-N, L-G and N-G. This translates to line-to-neutral, line-to-ground and neutral-to-ground. With standard surge protection the ground is connected to the power line so that a surge will be diverted to the ground. If you’re wall outlet is not properly grounded you can create more damage than you are preventing. A surge will find an entrance point somewhere. If it travels to the ground and you’re out was not grounded it will reverse itself and travel along another line such as coaxial cable or phone line.
Plasma televisions should use mode one, which is line-to-neutral, for the best surge protection. This isolates power from traveling to the ground in the event that you don’t have proper grounding. One thing to note is that you will void a warranty if you are not correctly connected. Certain factors won’t affect you, like lightning strikes or problem with your power supplier’s transformers. But using the wrong type of surge protector will nullify the warranty.
Having proper Joules is also important. Joules ratings range anywhere from 300 to 4500. Having too little protection will obviously not be sufficient enough, so you want to choose something mid range or higher. 1000 Joules is the minimum protection for a plasma. You want to make sure the delay is as small as possible. Search protection delay time should be less than 1 ns. Check the packaging to make sure the plasma TV surge protector you choose has this kind of rating. Another thing to look for in quality is the different levels of protection provided by the surge protector. Cheaper plasma surge protectors will cause line noise or negatively affect the signal on the phone lines, ethernet ports or cable connections. Spend a little more money than you would normally on a plasma surge protector and protect your investment. You’ll think yourself in the long run.
